AFC Notes: Jets, Wilson, Levis, Dolphins, Brewer, Ravens QBs

A few weeks before he announced his retirement in early June, quarterback Russell Wilson claimed that the Jets made him an offer in free agency. Had he signed with the Jets, Wilson would have slotted in behind starter Geno Smith, his backup in Seattle from 2020-21. But it doesn’t appear there was any real chance of that happening, as Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic writes that talk of the Jets making an offer to the 10-time Pro Bowler “was overblown.”

Wilson now works for CBS, leaving Bailey Zappe, Brady Cook and fourth-round rookie Cade Klubnik to compete for the Jets’ No. 2 job in training camp. If nobody from that trio seizes the role, Titans signal-caller Will Levis could be a name to watch for the Jets in a trade for a late-round pick or on the waiver wire, per Rosenblatt.

Levis was the 33rd overall selection in 2023, but he failed to live up to his draft status over his first couple of years and fell out of favor in Tennessee. The Titans bailed on Levis as a starter when they drafted Cam Ward first overall in 2025. Ward is locked into the position, while Levis will fight to make the roster after missing all of last season with a shoulder injury. Unfortunately for Levis, he has no shot at winning the No. 2 gig after the Titans added Mitchell Trubisky on a two-year, $10.5MM pact in free agency. They also brought in Hendon Hooker as a potential third-stringer, further calling Levis’ future with the franchise into question.

A couple more notes from the AFC…

  • Dolphins center **Aaron Brewer‘**s three-year, $52MM extension includes $21.33MM in fully guaranteed money, according to Over the Cap. The Dolphins will pay it out in the form of a $6MM signing bonus, Brewer’s 2026-2027 base salaries ($1.22MM and $8.11MM, respectively) and a $6MM roster bonus due on the third day of the 2027 league year. If Brewer is still on the Dolphins’ roster on the 2028 league year, $4.43MM of his $15.32MM salary for that season will become fully guaranteed. In the event he is still on the team on the third day of the ’29 league year, he will collect a $1MM roster bonus.
  • With five quarterbacks on their roster and not enough reps to go around, the Ravens could subtract from the position sometime soon, Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic observes. As things stand, they have veterans Tyler Huntley and Skylar Thompson joining undrafted rookies Diego Pavia and Joe Fagnano behind franchise passer Lamar Jackson. Even if Baltimore sits Jackson in the preseason, the team should only need to carry three other QBs, Zrebiec contends. The Ravens retained Huntley on a two-year, $5MM deal with $3.5MM in fully guaranteed money back in March. He looks like a roster lock, meaning any of Thompson, Pavia and Fagnano could end up on the outs in the coming weeks. Those three do not have any guaranteed money in their contracts.
