Despite rumors floating around that said otherwise, The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman is reporting that Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich never interviewed with the Michigan Wolverines for their head coaching opening. In fact, Feldman said that he was never a candidate at all.

Previously, it had been reported by Football Scoop, a site that covers the coaching angle of college football, that Stenavich was a “popular name” in the search because of Stenavich’s pre-Jim Harbaugh ties. Stenavich played at Michigan from 2001 to 2005 under head coach Lloyd Carr, helping the Wolverines win the Big Ten as a redshirt sophomore and junior. Stenavich was twice named an All-Big Ten player with Michigan before moving on to the NFL, where he had a two-year stint with the Packers.

After his NFL career, Stenavich began his coaching career as a strength and conditioning intern at Michigan (2011) before moving into a graduate assistant role (2012-2013). Since leaving Ann Arbor, he’s had full-time coaching stints with Northern Arizona, San Jose State, the San Francisco 49ers and now the Packers, where he’s been the offensive coordinator since 2022.

At the moment, Stenavich is tied with Miami’s Frank Smith and Minnesota’s Wes Phillips as the longest-tenured offensive coordinators in the NFL. Last year, Stenavich interviewed for play-calling offensive coordinator jobs (head coach Matt LaFleur calls offensive plays for the Packers) and was even interviewed for the Chicago Bears’ head coaching vacancy.

The Michigan job ultimately went to former Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham, who stepped down from his position with the Utes two weeks ago. Utah had a head coach in waiting in former defensive coordinator Morgan Calley, so it’s uncertain at this time whether Whittingham was convinced to step down (to avoid being pushed out for Calley) or whether he made that decision on his own volition.
