Adam Schefter Previews Patriots’ Possible Deadline Plans

Adam Schefter is getting ready for one of his busiest times of the year- the NFL trade deadline. Teams now have less than a week to get deals done to improve their teams.

The Patriots got the ball rolling on Tuesday with two separate deals. First, the team shipped out edge-rusher Keion White to the San Francisco 49ers. Then, the team dealt veteran Kyle Dugger to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Both of those deals resulted in the Patriots getting a late-round pick swap.

The Dugger move, in particular, freed up some money for the team, and now many are wondering if more moves are coming. Schefter appeared on “The Pat McAfee Show” and provided some insight on what the Patriots could end up doing.

“I could see the Patriots making a move here,” Schefter said. “Whether it’s for a defensive back, whether it’s for another running back for a little bit of running back depth. Whether it’s for another wide receiver, although those wide receivers are playing really well right now.

“I can see New England saying, ‘Hey, we’re in this great spot right now. We got a chance to beat Buffalo for the division. We got a chance to host a home playoff game. I wouldn’t be surprised if New England made a move here before the deadline.”

Schefter mentioned defensive back, running back, and wide receiver as the positions the Patriots could look for upgrades at. It’s unknown whether Schefter has inside knowledge about that, or if those are just the positions HE thinks they should look for.

Defensive back definitely makes sense as a need. After getting rid of Dugger, the team’s safeties are now Craig Woodson, Jaylinn Hawkins, and Dell Pettus. It seems unlikely the team will enter the back half of the season with just three at the position.

At running back, the team could stand to upgrade, but they may prefer to see if TreVeyon Henderson develops more in his rookie season. Stefon Diggs, Mack Hollins, and Kayshon Boutte have been solid at receiver, but the bottom of the depth chart hasn’t done much.
