Adam Schefter has one of the most prominent jobs in sports media as ESPN’s top NFL insider, but the money and fame don’t necessarily make for an easy life outside of work.

Earlier this year, the Worldwide Leader in Sports announced they signed Adam Schefter to a multi-year contract extension. And with his 59th birthday approaching (Dec. 21), there’s no indicator that Schefter is ready to call it quits on his luxurious job any time soon.

From the outside, one might think that Schefter enjoys a stress-free life with a salary worth millions a year. And who wouldn’t want to have good relationships with top NFL players, agents and executives that allow you to break the league’s top news stories?

During an appearance on “The Mental Podcast”, Adam Schefter explained why his personal life isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Schefter, who’s been married to Sharri Maio since 2007, has had to make plenty of social sacrifices because of his time-consuming career.

Specifically, Schefter explained that the couple hardly go out for dinner anymore, since his career as an insider has forced him to leave plenty of social gatherings. Wanting to avoid such awkward and stressful situations, Schefter and Maio spend most of their free time together at home:

“My wife is a homebody and that works well with the job, because inevitably, we’ll be at home, and stories will happen. And I don’t have to feel the guilt of being out to dinner. I’ve had it happen so many times now where I’ve been out to dinner with another couple or we’ve been in a group, and I have to go, ‘Excuse me, I have to go work on something.’ It has happened too many times to count, and it never seems to fail.

So we just don’t do those things. We stay home, and we order in, we hang out with our dogs, stream some shows. And when the phone call comes in, ‘Excuse me.’ I don’t have to step away from the table, I don’t have to leave the restaurant. I’ve had that happen too many times.”

That’s the reality of being a top sports insider, especially in a sport where the offseason news stories and scoops never end.

Longtime NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski stunned everyone by retiring from ESPN last September to accept the GM job of the St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team. It was later reported that Wojnarowski felt extremely burnt out from his demanding career, leaving millions on the table.

Adam Schefter’s Schedule Is Going To Get Even Busier In September

With the NFL regular season now just three weeks away, Schefter’s schedule is going to get even busier. He’ll have to be on top of trade news, free agent signings, injury updates and much more after the regular season kicks off on Sept. 4.
