An actor has reportedly quit the upcoming biopic about legendary NFL head coach John Madden due to allegations of director David O. Russell using racist language on the set of the film. Russell has been a controversial figure during his Hollywood career to due both on-set and alleged off-set incidents.
Madden is set to be directed by divisive filmmaker David O. Russell, known for his work on movies such as Three Kings, I Heart Huckabees, The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook, and American Hustle. Academy Award winner Nicolas Cage will be starring as the former Raiders head coach and NFL broadcaster, while fellow Oscar winner Christian Bale will be portraying late team owner Al Davis.
According to reports, during an impromptu monologue, Russell allegedly used the N-word, prompting the actor and some crew members to walk off set. Studio sources told TMZ , however, that it was the unnamed actor who initially suggested including the slur in the scene, which was ultimately not used in the final cut.
It is unclear who the actor is or what role they were set to play.
“Crew and cast members told us that on Friday, Russell was working with the unnamed actor on an impromptu monologue when the director allegedly said the N-word … and that upset the actor, along with others, who allegedly walked off set before they broke for lunch, and subsequently wrapped for the day.”
“We’re also told by the cast and crew sources that a day earlier, the same actor made it clear he did not want to be nude in a scene — a locker room setting — which allegedly pissed off David, and his reaction was ‘unprofessional.'” [via TMZ]
When filming his 1999 movie Three Kings, he and actor George Clooney infammously got into a heated physical altercation over Russell’s treatment of crew members.
A few years later, during the production of his film I Heart Huckabees, behind-the-scenes footage leaked showing Russell in a profanity-laced tirade at actress Lily Tomlin.
Then, in 2011 reports circulated that Russell clashed with crew on the set of The Fighter. That same year, his transgender niece filed a police report alleging inappropriate conduct. While the case was closed because there were no witnesses to the alleged assault, Russell admitted to feeling up his teenage niece, claiming she was acting “very provocative towards him.”
Given all that, they idea that this guy could be someone who says the N-word is certainly within the realm of possibility.
