PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers defense got a very faithful representation of the Green Bay Packers offense from their scout team at practice on Thursday, and that’s probably because the man running that Packers offense was something of an expert on the subject: Aaron Rodgers.
In addition to his usual duties with the first-team Steelers offense, Rodgers took extra reps helping the scout team — and the Pittsburgh defense prepare — for his former squad on Thursday.
While plenty has changed about these Packers since Rodgers left for New York in 2023, the structure of the offensive scheme installed by head coach Matt LaFleur and commanded by offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich has not.
Steelers safety Juan Thornhill said facing Rodgers will be a big help when it comes to understanding how the Packers will attack them.
“Yeah, definitely, because I mean, he knows it,” Thornhill said after practice. “He knows their system, the tempo that they’re going to go at. It’s definitely going to help us out.”
He also said just generally facing a quarterback as sharp as the 21-year vet has been a bonus for the Steelers defense, when they’ve been able to do so.
“It forces us to communicate a lot faster, more deliberate with us, as well. Just because he know our defense, he knows the tempo that they’re gonna be going at. It just makes us communicate a little bit better, with the crowd noise, as well.”
