Aaron Rodgers Thinks Steelers Have Something Special in Roman Wilson: ‘So Damn Talented’

UNITY TWP., Pa. -Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers offered a telling endorsement of second-year wide receiver Roman Wilson, providing hope that the former Michigan standout could still develop into a breakout contributor.

“I would say Roman, he’s just gotta get out of his head a little bit,” Rodgers said. “I think he’s such a good kid. He cares so much about everything, whether it’s my approval or if he’s doing it right. He’s just gotta trust himself. He’s so damn talented”

The remarks from the four-time NFL MVP are significant, as questions have persisted about what has held Wilson back since arriving in Pittsburgh. A third-round pick in 2024, Wilson’s rookie season was derailed by injuries. He missed the preseason and most of the regular season due to ankle and hamstring issues. Even when healthy, the Steelers appeared hesitant to use him extensively.

Wilson played just five snaps in his first healthy appearance against the Raiders last season, despite the offense lacking a clear No. 2 wide receiver. Though he returned to full practice in early January and was designated to return from injured reserve, Pittsburgh opted not to activate him for the team’s playoff game against Baltimore. It was reported that the decision had more to do with his readiness and grasp of the playbook than lingering physical limitations.

Wilson has reportedly shown improvement this offseason and has made several plays in training camp. However, the Steelers’ initial 2025 depth chart listed him as a third-team player and the fifth wide receiver overall. He has since rotated with the first-team offense in certain personnel groupings, signaling that he could easily rise.

Rodgers’ comments could carry significant weight for Wilson’s development. The veteran quarterback is widely regarded as an on-field extension of the coaching staff, and his belief in Wilson’s ability may be exactly what the young receiver needs to take the next step.

The Steelers have long searched for a consistent option opposite star wideout DK Metcalf. If Wilson can stay healthy and continue to grow within the system, he may finally emerge as the No. 2 receiver the team has lacked in recent years.
