PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers still hates his new helmet. Instead of his customary Schutt Air XP Q11 helmet, Rodgers is wearing the Schutt Air XP Pro VTD II this season.
Rodgers is still trying to figure out why the NFL banned his former helmet model.
“I Hate it. Hate it, hate it,” Rodgers said. “I mean I wore this one last year, had no concussions, some arbitrary ruling made it obsolete. Silly. I should have pushed it more, petitioned to wear it again one more time.”
The part that bothers Rodgers the most about his new helmet is the aesthetics.
“Aesthetics. Looks terrible,” Rodgers said.
Rodgers saw an old picture of him on the videoboard in New England on Sunday when he surpassed his former teammate Brett Favre for fourth all-time on the NFL passing touchdown list.
“It was a picture of me from 2012. I said, ‘Look at that. Helmet fits perfect. Tiny little ear pads. Face mask in the perfect spot,'” Rodgers said.
In August at St. Vincent College, Rodgers compared his new helmet to a spaceship.
“I don’t like it, no. I’m trying to change. We’re in the process still. It looks like a damn spaceship out there,” the four-time NFL MVP said.
“We got to change it. The face mask doesn’t fit the helmet because that’s an old face mask, obviously just like I’m old, but we’re trying to find the right helmet right now.”
Rodgers is stuck with his new helmet. However, the future Hall of Famer has played well through three games in the new model.
He is tied for second in touchdown passes with seven. Six of Rodgers’ seven touchdown passes have come in the red zone. The Steelers currently rank second in red zone scoring percentage (TDs only) at 87.5%).
