Free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers shared some devastating personal life news that explains the delay in his Pittsburgh Steelers free agency decision.
Following his release from the New York Jets, Aaron Rodgers engaged in deep contract discussions with the Steelers. Head coach Mike Tomlin and owner Art Rooney II have publicly expressed optimism that Rodgers will sign, but the 41-year-old hasn’t decided on if he’ll keep playing or retire from football.
During his appearance on “The Joe Rogan Experience”, Rodgers revealed that several people “close to” him have been diagnosed cancer.
“I’ve figured it out the last year when I’ve been in the weeds with these people who are close to me that have cancer,” Rodgers told Rogan.
Rodgers has faced mounting criticism for prolonging his decision, but serious personal life matters like this should help others put things in perspective. Some things are bigger than football, and Rodgers wants to be there for the people he cares about.
Aaron Rodgers’ heartbreaking announcement to Rogan came a month after he said on “The Pat McAfee Show” that he was in a “serious relationship.” Rodgers said he also had other “personal commitments”, emphasizing that football was not his primary concern at the time.
The Steelers haven’t at all indicated that there’s a deadline for the four-time MVP to make his decision. For now, veteran backup Mason Rudolph is the No. 1 signal-caller on Pittsburgh’s depth chart.
The Steelers have been a consistent playoff contender despite being held back by lackluster quarterback play since 2019. Rodgers may not be a superstar anymore, but he would be an upgrade over any QB Pittsburgh has used since Ben Roethlisberger’s last healthy season in 2018.
Rodgers would excel behind a stout offensive line, with D.K. Metcalf as his go-to wide receiver. Throw in a top-10 defense, and Rodgers would make the Steelers a Super Bowl contender.
