20 years ago, rookie Aaron Rodgers saw his first extensive action against veteran Deion Sanders. Now veteran Rodgers will face rookie Shedeur Sanders.
With the AFC North division title on the line, the Pittsburgh Steelers travel to Cleveland on Sunday to face the Browns. Among the stories tied into the matchup, Cleveland rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders will face 21-year veteran signal caller Aaron Rodgers. This isn’t Rodgers’ first time playing against the Sanders family. He gained some experience with it in his rookie year.
Ironically, the Baltimore Ravens will face the Green Bay Packers Saturday in Title Town. However, 20 years ago, Rodgers got some extensive game action against the Ravens.
The game was well out of reach late in the third quarter for Green Bay. They decided to let Rodgers play the rest of the game. On the other side, future Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders.
In that game, Sanders picked off Brett Favre for a 24-yard return, Rodgers committed another three turnovers in his lone quarter of play, and Baltimore won 48-3. Both teams were out of the playoff hunt at that point in the season.
This time, veteran Rodgers has his Steelers in playoff position while the next installment of the Sanders legacy is grinding out his first few NFL starts at quarterback. The remarkable matchup highlights not only the incredible career of Rodgers’ 20+ seasons, but also the work of the Sanders family.
Both of these signal callers’ stories are still being written. However, when one member of the Sanders family story was concluding, Rodgers was beginning. Now, Rodgers gets to witness the beginning of another Sander family member’s story at the beginning, while his may be nearing its conclusion.
