Quarterback Aaron Rodgers was given a shocking grade for his four-touchdown performance against the New York Jets.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers had an impressive debut with the Pittsburgh Steelers, finishing the game with four touchdowns and zero interceptions. However, not everyone felt that way.
Pro Football Focus believes Rodgers had two turnover worthy plays, and gave him a 56.2 overall grade for his Week 1 performance against the New York Jets. That grade ranked 24th among quarterbacks in the NFL.
According to PFF, the two plays that brought down Rodgers’ grade were a dig route thrown behind wide receiver Calvin Austin III that was nearly an interception and another near interception he threw to Jets cornerback Brandon Stephens while under pressure.
Still, Rodgers’ debut was not deserving to be the 24th worst in the league. In fact, he currently leads the league with his four passing touchdowns and is among the best in completion percentage after connecting on 22 of his 30 passes on Sunday.
Rodgers was one of the biggest reasons why the Steelers were able to escape with the 34-32 win after what was a very disappointing performance by their star-studded defense.
Head coach Mike Tomlin certainly felt that way.
“I just thought he was game all day,” Tomlin said. “But again, you guys asked me last week, why was I confident. That’s why I was confident. That’s what I’ve been looking at in preparation, and I’m appreciated of it, not only his efforts but the efforts of the collective.”
No Pittsburgh quarterback has ever thrown for four or more touchdowns in their Steelers debut other than Rodgers, who will now look to continue proving his doubters wrong against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2.
