Aaron Rodgers may not play at all this preseason

The Pittsburgh Steelers kick off their 2025 season tonight against the Jacksonville Jaguars, as preseason play continues around the NFL. Several stars won’t be on the field for Pittsburgh, including quarterback Aaron Rodgers. And while the four-time MVP won’t be playing in Jacksonville, he may not be playing until the regular season.

Head coach Mike Tomlin spoke on Saturday, where he strongly hinted that No. 8 may be a permanent fixture on the sidelines for all of exhibition play.

“This guy has been doing this for 21 years,” Tomlin said via Alan Saunders of Steelers Now. “His cumulative snap total and what’s required for him to be ready is different than others. And so if I’m not adaptable and open to adjustments relative to the needs of our guys, then I’m not doing my job.”

Many believe Rodgers should see at least a little bit of action during the preseason, considering he’s in a new offense with all new teammates. One of those who wants to see Rodgers on the field is NFL Network analyst Brian Baldinger, who said as much while joining me on Bleav In Steelers.

“I’d play him,” Baldinger said. “I’d play him with the number one offensive line. I remember last year with the Jets, I think he took 10 snaps against the Giants in the final preseason game. I wouldn’t have any hesitation of playing them out there [for] the second preseason game and maybe the third preseason game for an opening drive at least just to come out of the locker room and get all the jitters out, even at his age. Get [some] work with the number one offense, get the ball to DK just to have some success before they begin the season.”

We’ll have all the answers soon enough on whether Rodgers does suit up before Week 1.
