Aaron Rodgers isn’t quite ready to call it quits on his NFL career, as reports indicate that controversial 41-year-old quarterback told the New York Jets that he intends on playing next season. The Jets announced they were moving on from Rodgers earlier this month.
With a new head coach and general manager in town in Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey, the organization decided to move on from Aaron Rodgers, who won just five games in his two seasons in New York.
According to a report from Sports Illustrated, Rodgers told Glenn and Mougey that he intends to play next season. The new Jets regime reportedly told Rodgers that if he was going to return to Gang Green in 2025, he’d have to participate in OTAs and put an end to his weekly appearances on The Pat McAfee Show.
Following his meetings with the Jets, the New York Post reported that Rodgers “urged” the Jets to let him return for another season or two, and when they told him they were going in another direction, he “accepted his fate like a man going to the gallows and slipped into the darkness for a few days.”
Last season, in what will prove to be his lone season as the Jets’ starting quarterback, Rodgers started in 17 games for the Jets this season and posted a 5-12 record while completed 63% of his passes for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. While Rodgers looked more comfortable toward the end of the season, he still largely looked like a shell of the former four-time MVP he once was throughout his entire tenure with the Jets.
While nothing has been confirmed, it’s been speculated that teams who might be interested in acquiring Rodgers as their quarterback for 2025 are the Las Vegas Raiders, Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, and Tennessee Titans.
