UNITY TWP., PA — Aaron Rodgers is a football player, not an astronaut. Taking the field at St. Vincent College in a new-age helmet, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback feels more like the latter than the former.

Rodgers, a four-time Associated Press NFL MVP, had won the same helmet for the first 20 years of his pro career. League equipment rules have forced him to try out a few others since he joined Mike Tomlin’s team, but he’s currently in the earlier stages of a Goldilocks sort of situation.

“Yeah, I still don’t like it,” Rodgers said about his current lid on Tuesday afternoon. “No, I don’t like it. I’m trying to change. We’re in the process still. It looks like (I’m on) a damn spaceship out there. I’ve gotta change it. The facemask doesn’t fit the helmet. I guess it’s an old facemask, obviously, just like I’m old. But we’re trying to find the right helmet right now.”

#Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers isn’t a fan of having to wear a new helmet. Here are his thoughts on Schutt’s Air XP Pro VTD II model:

Rodgers has been testing Schutt’s Air XP Pro VTD II. Rodgers’ customary lid, Schutt’s Sports Air XP Q11 model, was included on the league’s list of banned helmets ahead of this season. Begrudgingly, he wore Schutt’s F7 Pro helmet at mandatory minicamp in June.

“I can’t stand the helmet,” Rodgers said then. “I’ve worn a Schutt for 20 years. Somehow it finally didn’t pass the safety standards.”

Riddell’s Foundation, Speed Icon, Speed and Revolution Speed Classic models were also outlawed before this campaign.

Expect Rodgers to give at least another helmet model or two a spin before opening the season against his former team, the New York Jets.
