The New York Jets are releasing veteran wide receiver Allen Lazard, according to multiple reports on Tuesday, which could lead to the Pittsburgh Steelers reuniting Aaron Rodgers with another of his former targets.
Lazard, 30, will have to go through waivers after his release is made official by the Jets, and a team claiming him would be on the hook for the remainder of his contract, but it is only fractionally more than the veteran minimum. Because his contract was guaranteed by the Jets, they would be on the hook for the difference — about $83,000 — if he clears waivers first and then signs with another team.
Lazard played with Rodgers at two stops in career, first with the Green Bay Packers form 2018-22, and the following Rodgers to the Jets in 2023.
Lazard has not been a big piece of the puzzle for the Jets this season and has also been a healthy scratch. He’s played in 10 games and made two starts, but has been targeted just 18 times. He has 10 catches for 70 yards and one touchdown on the season.

The Steelers have been revamping their wide receiver position with veterans over the last two weeks. They first signed Marquez Valdes-Scantling to their practice squad in November, and he made his debut two weeks ago against the Baltimore Ravens.
That week, the Steelers also claimed anther veteran wide receiver Adam Thielen off waivers, putting the two veterans into the lineup that week. So far, while neither player has been a big part of the passing offense, the moves have paid off, with the Steelers winning their last two games.
Could a reunion with Lazard also be in the cards? The Steelers waived rookie Ke’Shawn Williams to make room for MVS to be signed to the active roster this week, so they would have to jettison another player to make room for Lazard, but given their recent success with veteran wide receivers, they just might look into it.
