The Pittsburgh Steelers reportedly agreed to sign Mike McCarthy as their new head coach. A couple of weeks after parting ways with Mike Tomlin, who coached them for 19 years, they found their guy.
McCarthy last coached the Dallas Cowboys in the 2024 season. Jerry Jones fired him after a 7-10 record in a season that included multiple injuries for the NFC East team. McCarthy is headed back home to take over a Steelers team without a playoff win in the last nine years.
Aaron Rodgers’ future remains unclear after he joined the Steelers to play under Mike Tomlin. Team owner Art Rooney II said Tomlin’s departure likely meant Rodgers wouldn’t return in 2026. He has a history with McCarthy (113-60-1 and a Super Bowl win in 14 years with the Green Bay Packers), which could open the door for another return.
Rodgers and McCarthy’s relationship soured in their last years with the Packers. However, Rodgers appeared to have moved on from that in 2022, when he faced his former coach for the first time since he was fired.
In an old interview with Matt Schneidman of The Athletic, Rodgers said that his bond with McCarthy was eternal.
“And when I see those guys I played with in 2010 and when I see the coaches that were on the staff, when I see Mike, when I talk to Mike, there’s just always something that’s gonna keep you together because you won that thing together and you went through the adversity to overcome it to win a world championship,” Rodgers said.
“That’s always gonna connect us and bond us, and with time, it’s just increased the greater gratitude that I have for him, the time we spent together, the love I have for him and the appreciation for what he meant to my career.”
I talked to Aaron Rodgers in 2022 about facing Mike McCarthy for the first time since the Packers fired him in 2018.
“I think time always can be a great healer, not that there needed to be a lot of healing in our relationship.”

The offseason just started, and considering how things went last year, it might take a few months before we hear from Aaron Rodgers again.
