Aaron Glenn praises Justin Fields: “He’s not trying to be a celebrity quarterback”

The comment is being construed as a criticism of Aaron Rodgers.

During the first week of Jets OTAs, head coach Aaron Glenn had positive things to say about his new quarterback, Justin Fields.

Glenn was effusive in his praise of Fields, but the line “celebrity quarterback” is understandably generating most of the attention.

The Jets, of course, moved on from the ultimate celebrity quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, in this offseason. Rodgers is always the center of attention wherever he is, and does his best to create news.

Glenn’s comments have people wondering whether his wording was intentional in an attempt to take a dig at Rodgers. Nobody will ever know for sure. Based on the context of the comment, my personal guess is no. It seems like he was focused on praising Fields as his type of player.

Either way, this does speak to the type of team Glenn wants to build and the type of quarterback he wants to have. Inevitably at some point during his tenure as Jets head coach, the team is going to need to try and find a top end quarterback, presumably through the NFL Draft. If successful, that player will inevitably become a star and a celebrity. But Glenn clearly wants the Jets to be a stable organization when that player arrives. In far too many recent instances, the Jets have drafted a quarterback expecting him to be an immediate savior.
