Former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn was introduced as the new head coach of the New York Jets on Monday and brought plenty of fire to the moribund franchise. In addition to energy, though, Glenn also brought some answers.
Having been drafted by the New York Jets in 1994, Aaron Glenn knows what to expect with the New York City media and evidenced that knowledge with how he handled a question about Aaron Rodgers.
Glenn handled it by answering the questions before any reporter had the chance to ask it, revealing that he’s already spoken to Rodgers and that he and new general manager Darren Mougey will assess the situation.
“Aaron Rodgers will be talked about. We’ve already texted that communication with Aaron Rodgers. And as we continue to look at the roster, we’ll make decisions accordingly and that’s with a number of people on the team,” Glenn said at the end of his opening remarks.
“Me and Mougey are going to sit and talk and go over the whole roster. I will tell you now that is going to be the answer to a number of questions when it comes to the roster in general. We are looking forward to that process. I can’t tell you how long that process will be but the thing is we are going to make sure we get the right answer and we are not going to rush to this answer because we are going to the right answer,” he added later.
Later, while speaking with reporters in a media scrum, Glenn stressed that their evaluation will not solely be about Rodgers but about the whole team.
“This thing is not about Aaron Rodgers. It is about the roster.”
Glenn certainly faces a difficult decision when it comes to Aaron Rodgers, as the rookie head coach is seemingly stuck between a rock and a hard place.
On one hand, the Rodgers experiment in New York has failed miserably over the last two seasons and the team is likely facing a rebuild that will require a young franchise QB that Glenn can build with.
On the other hand, though, the Jets don’t have many options. The upcoming quarterback draft class is considered to be weaker than most years and they don’t have any promising talents on the roster (except maybe second year QB Jordan Travis, who played at Florida State).
As for the free agent market, that list includes the likes of Sam Darnold, Justin Fields, Russell Wilson, James Winston, and Marcus Mariota. Kirk Cousins may also be available if the Falcons decide to cut him.
