It’s not easy being the son of a football legend. However, Jason Witten’s son Cooper Witten makes it look quite easy.
Jason’s youngest son isn’t just carrying his name behind his back, he is actually creating his own hype. Cooper, a five-star recruit in the class of 2027, is the No. 1 linebacker in the country, per 247Sports Composite Rankings. And yes, that’s No. 1. He’s also No. 12 overall, which puts him firmly in the middle of a tough recruiting war.
Witten’s already a star on the field. He’s fast, clocking a 10.91 in the 100-meter dash this spring. He’s instinctive and also rough and challenging enough. And, according to scouts, he is still improving.
Right now, six schools have the inside track. Georgia, Clemson, Texas, Ohio State, Texas A&M, and Tennessee are going full throttle to land the linebacker, according to Rivals.
Each school has its pitch. Georgia wants to keep stacking freakish athletes in its already scary defense. Texas is dreaming of keeping Jason Witten’s legacy alive in the Lone Star State. Tennessee? That one’s personal. That’s where Dad became a star before dominating Sundays for nearly two decades.
Ohio State and Texas A&M also have major sway. Both offer big-time SEC or Big Ten exposure and a straight path to the NFL. Clemson, with its defensive track record and consistent playoff presence, adds another layer of intrigue.
“He’s just one of those guys who jumps off the screen,” 247Sports wrote about Cooper Witten. “The IQ, the athleticism, the production – it’s all there. And he plays like he knows he belongs.”
That’s high praise for someone who just wrapped up his sophomore year. But scouts aren’t shy. They’ve seen the way he flies around the field. They’ve seen the combine numbers. They’ve seen the bloodline.
And the calls won’t stop anytime soon. Coaches know what’s at stake. Landing Cooper Witten means adding an elite defensive anchor, and maybe even a future first-rounder. The next stretch will be key. Fall visits, relationships, and maybe even a bit of family pull could be factors.
