6 New York Giants Coaching Trade Candidates This Offseason

After deciding to move on from Brian Daboll following four seasons of sub-average play, the New York Giants will be hiring a new head coach again this offseason. Mike Kafka is serving as the interim coach for now, but they’ll embark on a full-blown coaching search at season’s end.

Recently, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio reported that the Giants haven’t ruled out the possibility of trading for their next head coach. Trades involving coaches are rare, but trading for an already proven option could be preferred over trying to hire someone who’s never done it before. After all, the Giants tried that with Daboll, Joe Judge, and Ben McAdoo. Those didn’t work out either.

So, if the Giants do try to trade for their next head coach, who are some of the candidates who could take over in New York?

Zac Taylor

If the Giants want a coach with experience working with a young first-round quarterback, they could place a call to the Bengals. While he’s still struggling to find the right fit for his defensive coordinator, Zac Taylor’s offenses have been effective. Of course, it’s also possible that the Bengals will make this one easy by firing Taylor instead.

Kevin Stefanski

The Cleveland Browns are one of the NFL’s worst teams this season, but that was to be expected with their QB situation. Is that really Kevin Stefanski’s fault? He’s a two-time NFL Coach of the Year with a specialty in offense, which could be exactly what the Giants are looking for. But again, the Browns could end up firing him instead.

Mike McDaniel

There’s a chance that the Miami Dolphins are preparing to fire Mike McDaniel. If so, the Giants should definitely give him an interview. Yet, if the Dolphins didn’t move on from McDaniel after Miami fell to 1-6, it’s possible they want to keep him around for another year. Or maybe a team like the Giants is willing to offer a draft pick for the eccentric coach instead.

Kyle Shanahan

Kyle Shanahan trade rumors have surfaced before, but we’re not sure who would be motivated to make a deal from San Francisco. It seems like he’s in a great spot with John Lynch, yet an aggressive trade offer from New York could provide just enough motivation to make a deal. If the Giants could get an elite schemebuilder like Shanahan, we’d imagine they’d return to being an annual playoff contender again.

John Harbaugh

There have been multiple instances where it seems like the Baltimore Ravens could move on from John Harbaugh. This could be one of those times with the Ravens flirting with falling below .500 for just the third time in Harbaugh’s NFL head coaching career. Yet, if the Ravens aren’t ready to fire Harbaugh but are open to him moving on, the Giants should present an offer too good to refuse, because he is one of the NFL’s coaching greats.
