5 points: Observations from Cowboys-Bears and looking ahead to Sunday night

In the words of musical icon and national hero Axl Rose, “Where do we go? Where do we go now?” It seems fitting to peg Sweet Child O’ Mine as this week’s anthem at The Star, where the question is asked 15 times during the song, but never gets answered.

The Dallas Cowboys will have to find an answer to that question after their rough loss to the Chicago Bears, which dropped their record to 1-2 on the season. They face an uphill battle as Dallas will take on the Green Bay Packers and Micah Parsons on Sunday Night Football. Whatever solutions they need to pen, they’d better do it quickly; otherwise, the curtains could fall on their 2025 set sooner than expected.

Here are five observations from the loss to the Bears and what lies ahead entering Week 4.

First point: The injury bug is biting ankles

First, DaRon Bland was injured in practice before Week 2, and then Cooper Beebe, who suffered a high ankle sprain/bone fracture, was shelved on injured reserve for multiple weeks. Now, two more starters on offense join Beebe with multiple-week injuries.

CeeDee Lamb and Tyler Booker both suffered high ankle sprains in Sunday’s loss and, depending on their severity, are expected to miss a minimum of two to three weeks. Jerry Jones talked to the media on Monday and mentioned they haven’t ruled out injured reserve as a possibility for either player.

Losing Lamb for any period of time is a crushing blow for an offense with a top-five passing attack just three weeks into the season. Lamb’s importance isn’t just in the first half of games. If the Cowboys are in shootouts every week and need to score points quickly, having him out there makes things easier.

The George Pickens trade is looking much better now, considering the situation Dallas finds itself in and the lack of talent behind Pickens until Lamb returns. On Sunday, we witnessed the highs and lows of what this could entail. The highs included an incredible one-handed catch in the end zone, while the lows saw him volleying a ball into the air, resulting in an interception. He and Prescott have a week to enhance their chemistry to minimize any drop-off in performance compared to Lamb, but that might be asking a lot.

In Booker’s absence, T.J. Bass should be the one who gets the first opportunity to take over at right guard. Bass has started five games over his career with Dallas and is as solid a depth piece as you could ask for right now. One positive? The Cowboys can really evaluate Bass and his standing on the roster moving forward, who will be a restricted free agent at the end of the year. If he can show something over the next few weeks, it could land him a new deal to stick around in Dallas.

Second point: Let the kid play

It makes sense for the Cowboys to consider placing...
