We are at the point where the daily routine should be to check the transaction wire at 2 pm PT, given how often the San Francisco 49ers are making moves. Sure enough, the team worked out four players on Monday afternoon. Three of them were wide receivers, while one was a familiar face at quarterback.
Nate Sudfeld, assuming he was the one doing the throwing, was the quarterback. He was on the Niners roster back in 2021. The wide receivers are not exactly Terry McLaurin caliber, if fans are still holding out hopes for a splash trade:
Colton Dowell
Jalen Guyton
J.J. Jones
Let’s start with the 26-year-old, 6’3″, 212-pound Dowell, who was a seventh-round pick by the Tennessee Titans in the 2023 NFL Draft. Dowell caught one pass as a rookie after appearing in five games. He has not recorded a regular-season statistic since.
Guyton has the most regular-season success. The 6’1″, 212-pound receiver spent the 2019 through 2023 with the Los Angeles Chargers. During that span, Guyton caught 71 passes for 1,112 yards and seven touchdowns. The majority of that production happened in 2020 (28/511/3) and 2021 (31/448/3).
JJ Jones was an undrafted free agent this past draft out of North Carolina. The 6’2″, 210-pound wideout was waived by the Jacksonville Jaguars two weeks ago before the preseason began.
As Jauan Jennings’ injury lingers, Jordan Watkins’ high-ankle sprain keeps him out, and Jacob Cowing gets back into the swing of things, the need for a wide receiver at practice is high — especially if Demarcus Robinson’s suspension holds up.
