The NFL world was stunned earlier this week when the Los Angeles Rams acquired Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns for edge rusher Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick, and a 2029 third-round pick.
This adds a layer of intrigue to the Rams’ rivalry against the San Francisco 49ers and their impending pair of matchups in the 2026 NFL season. And for 49ers offensive tackle Trent Williams, he had a direct response to the news that he would have to face Garrett twice a season now.
“Same as everybody, everybody that’s not in Rams country. It sucks,” Williams admitted about his reaction via Vic Tafur on X, formerly known as Twitter; his response drew laughter from the team of reporters who had gathered to ask him questions.
Williams continued by talking about Garrett’s effectiveness and how he believes that he’ll only continue to get better.
“Myles, the scary part is he’s still a young player, so he’s still going to get better,” Williams said via 49erswebzone. “I know it’s scary after seeing what he did last year. I’m never expecting to run into the same player. I know that we see him Week 1 in Australia. He probably will be a little bit better than he was the last time I seen him.
“Just got to buckle up. It’s going to be tough. I ain’t the only one got to block him. There’s 31 other teams that got that same news, so it is what it is.”
Williams and the 49ers will first face Garrett and the Rams on September 10 in Melbourne, Australia.
