The San Francisco 49ers are signing edge rusher Trevis Gipson to the roster. Rookie Mykel Williams is likely out for another week, so the Niners could use a body along the defensive line.
Gipson, a fifth-round draft pick out of Tulsa by the Chicago Bears in 2020, started 19 games for the Bears between 2021 and 2022. During that stretch, Gipson had 18 tackles for loss and ten sacks.
Gipson played one game with the Tennessee Titans in 2023 and appeared in multiple games last season with the Seattle Seahawks. Gipson, 6’4″, 259 pounds, was placed on the Injured Reserve in December 2024 with an ankle injury that forced him to miss the remainder of the season.
It’s worth noting that Gipson was inactive for a string of nine consecutive games with the Seahawks before appearing in the first five games of the season. Gipson played 47 snaps for the Seahawks and rushed the passer on 25 of them.
Gipson tried out for the 49ers a couple of weeks ago, as well as the Cleveland Browns. The Niners kept him on their radar, and now Gipson gets a shot to earn a roster spot with two preseason games remaining.
Adding Gipson might not just be Mykel-related. Yetur Gross-Matos was working out on the side of practice last week. Perhaps the addition of Gipson means that Gross-Matos is still more than a week away from returning.
The 49ers officially announced the signing of Jeff Wilson and placed running back Ameer Abdullah on the Injured Reserve List, effectively ending his season. Quarterback Tanner Mordecai was waived, while offensive tackle Andre Dillard was activated from the Active/PUP list.
