The San Francisco 49ers shuffled their backfield on Wednesday, announcing a one-year contract for running back Sincere McCormick while releasing fellow running back Jordan Mims to open a roster spot. The transaction came despite head coach Kyle Shanahan calling off the mandatory minicamp sessions scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, following the conclusion of organized team activities last week.
This will be McCormick’s third tenure with the franchise within the past year. The 25-year-old spent part of the 2025 campaign on San Francisco’s practice squad, then inked a deal with the club on April 28, 2026, only to be let go on May 28 — the same day Mims joined the roster.
McCormick, who measures 5-foot-8 and 204 pounds, broke into the league as an undrafted free agent with the Las Vegas Raiders on May 13, 2022, remaining with the organization through 2024. During 2025, he bounced between practice squads with the 49ers, Arizona Cardinals, Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings. Across five career NFL appearances, including two starts, he has recorded 39 rushing attempts for 183 yards, a 4.7-yard average, along with six catches for 29 yards.
The Long Beach, California native starred at UTSA from 2019-21, amassing 3,939 rushing yards and 34 touchdowns on 724 carries across 37 games, while adding 66 receptions for 509 yards and a score. He twice garnered First-Team All-Conference USA recognition and Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year honors (2020-21), and was an AP Third-Team All-American in 2021.
Mims, a 26-year-old standing at 6-foot and weighing 205 pounds, played collegiately at Fresno State from 2017-22, where he earned All-Mountain West honors once. Undrafted in 2023, he had stops with the Buffalo Bills, New Orleans Saints and Tennessee Titans before landing in San Francisco. In 14 NFL games, he has managed 70 rushing yards at 3.5 yards per carry along with 12 receptions for 71 yards.
The 49ers running back room is headlined by Christian McCaffrey, Jordan James and Kaelon Black, who are expected to handle the bulk of the carries in the 2026 season. Meanwhile, Isaac Guerendo’s roster security appears uncertain, particularly given veteran Patrick Taylor’s value covering kicks and contributing on special teams — a phase where Guerendo was demoted.
