The New England Patriots have moved on from Kendrick Bourne, and now it looks like his former team might be in pursuit.
Wednesday brought news that New England made multiple roster moves. The Patriots acquired quarterback Tommy DeVito and also granted a release to Bourne.
Bourne made the Patriots’ 53-man roster but swiftly asked for a release, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
On Wednesday, ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported that Bourne’s former team, the 49ers, are interested in bringing the 30-year-old back.
“The 49ers are “very interested” in a reunion with Bourne, a source told ESPN’s Nick Wagoner,” Reiss wrote.
“The nine-year veteran has totaled 292 receptions for 3,714 yards and 22 touchdowns over his career,” Reiss added. “The Vikings had expressed interest in Bourne before trading for Adam Thielen … Bourne had his best NFL season in 2021, playing under coordinator Josh McDaniels in New England when he totaled 55 catches for 800 yards and five touchdowns. His ability to play multiple receiver spots added to his value, and Bourne had expressed excitement about McDaniels’ return to the Patriots as coordinator this year and possibly duplicating those results.”
But it wasn’t meant to be for Bourne and the Patriots. Now, he could be headed back to San Francisco, where his career began and where Bourne spent his first four NFL seasons.
