The 49ers continue to churn the bottom of their roster after signing Robbie Chosen and releasing Marquez Callaway

The San Francisco 49ers reportedly worked out wide receiver Robbie Chosen on Saturday. Chosen, who was signed on August 12, 2024, before being released a couple of weeks later ahead of the final 53-man roster cuts, just re-signed with the Niners. He’ll get his second stint in the Bay Area.

To make room for Chosen, the 49ers released wide receiver Marquez Callaway. Chosen is 6’3, and at 32, is a veteran who understands Kyle Shanahan’s system. Callaway, 6’2, and an undrafted free agent from the 2020 class, hasn’t caught a pass in the regular season since 2022.

Chosen is likely a training camp body who the 49ers feel can give the defense a good look. It’s not easy to do that if you’re a first-timer on any team, especially when you’re fighting for a job.

It feels like the 49ers have spun the magic wheel in free agency with these receivers lately. Chosen joins Andy Isabella, who recently signed this past week. It’s evident that the 49ers are looking for something different at the position. Perhaps, Chosen has what it takes.

Then again, this is the same player who was cut after the final preseason game, where he looked about as disinterested as possible when it came to run blocking.
