The San Francisco 49ers announced they’ve promoted quarterback Adrian Martinez from the practice squad to the team’s active roster. Since it’s a promotion, Martinez is now on the 53-man roster until he’s waived. That might be another sign that this is not a temporary move, making Martinez the backup quarterback.

Edge rusher Trevis Gipson was elevated from the practice squad. He gets the not over William Bradley-King. Gipson has started 19 games, albeit back in 2021 and 2022, so that might have been part of the reason he was called up over Bradley-King. Gipson also has the height and weight advantage over Bradley-King.

The other options at wide receiver for the Niners were Russell Gage and Junior Bergen. Gage did not perform well earlier in the season. Turner likely takes the place of Eli Apple on special teams, while Skyy Moore takes on a bigger workload at wide receiver. Turner played seven special teams snaps in Week 3, but that was his only action this season. That was also the last game Jauan Jennings missed.

The 49ers made a change on the practice squad. Defensive tackle Jordan Jefferson, who played sparingly last week after the team claimed him off waivers from the Jaguars, was waived. The 49ers signed cornerback Derrick Canteen to the practice squad as the corresponding move now that Martinez has taken Jefferson’s spot on the active roster.

Jefferson being waived suggests CJ West will be active after missing last week with a thumb injury. Kyle Shanahan said the team had toyed with West playing with a cast. Perhaps, they found a way where West was comfortable enough to play.
