The San Francisco 49ers made a couple of roster moves ahead of their Week 3 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals, placing Spencer Burford on Injured Reserve and elevating quarterback Adrian Martinez and wide receiver Malik Turner from the practice squad.
Burford suffered a knee injury in Week 2, and head coach Kyle Shanahan had acknowledged that Injured Reserve was a possibility for the offensive lineman. The move comes after the 49ers placed offensive lineman Ben Bartch on IR, leaving them without some of their depth at the position.
Burford had been manning the backup tackle spot behind Trent Williams and had played 11 snaps thus far this season, with 10 coming on special teams.
However, the injury seemed to be serious, as Shanahan shared that surgery may be a possibility for the offensive lineman. He’s now out for a minimum of four games. With Burford out, it seems that Austin Pleasants will be the swing tackle going forward.
San Francisco elevated Martinez for a second straight weekend amid Brock Purdy’s injury status. Purdy was considered highly unlikely to start in Week 3 with his toe injury, but it was unclear whether he’d end up being the No. 2 or No. 3 quarterback.
But, Martinez was not promoted to the active roster. That means quarterback Brock Purdy will not be eligible to be the emergency backup quarterback this weekend. So, it’ll be Purdy as the No. 2 option and Martinez as the No. 3 or former being an inactive, while the latter takes the No. 2 role.
Malik Turner is also being elevated after Jordan Watkins suffered a calf injury, and Jauan Jennings was considered questionable with his shoulder injury.
