There won’t be multiple Kubiaks getting hired during this head coaching cycle. Over the weekend, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported that San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak removed himself from consideration for any head coaching vacancies.
This is a week after Kubiak emerged as the lead candidate for the Pittsburgh Steelers and was also interviewing for the Las Vegas Raiders job. The Raiders’ gig is still available, while the Steelers hired Mike McCarthy.
While this past season was officially the first of Kubiak’s career as offensive coordinator, Kyle Shanahan was adamant that Kubiak’s job hadn’t changed in a couple of years.
So, Kubiak returns to an offense that finished second in DVOA, this in success rate, and sixth in EPA per play, despite missing multiple games from prominent players like George Kittle, Ricky Pearsall, and Brock Purdy.
The offense could look different next season if the 49ers add a player like Kyle Pitts or Isaiah Likely in free agency, or swing a trade for a big-name wide receiver to pair with Pearsall.
