The San Francisco 49ers have traded for wide receiver Skyy Moore from the Kansas City Chiefs, sending a 2027 sixth-round pick and receiving a 2027 seventh-round pick in return as well.
Moore, 24, was a second-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, but has struggled to find playing time while with the Chiefs. He found himself on the outskirts of a crowded wide receiver room this offseason and is now joining the 49ers, who are in dire need of receiver help.
The 49ers have struggled with injuries at the position for much of the offseason, which has especially popped up in training camp. Currently, San Francisco is down Brandon Aiyuk (ACL, MCL), Jauan Jennings (calf), Jacob Cowing (hamstring), and Jordan Watkins (high-ankle sprain).
Meanwhile, Demarcus Robinson will miss the first three games of the season, as head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed he’ll be suspended for the first three games for violating the
During the past two days, we’ve covered potential trade targets at wide receiver. We almost mentioned Moore, but decided to swing for the fences. Moore enters a contract year, so he has plenty to prove. Per Over the Cap, Moore won’t cost the 49ers more than $2 million this season. It’s a win-win as he’s a capable body, a former high draft pick, and comes into a situation where the Niners clearly want a “gadget” type of player.
Depending on which site you use, Moore had no more than two targets last year. He was much busier in 2023, with 36 targets, compared to 32 in 2022. In 2023, 21 of those targets happened underneath 10 yards. In 2022, 17 of those targets were of the short variety.
At 5’10, sub-200 pounds, Moore won’t be asked to block in between the numbers. That’s a significant part of Kyle Shanahan’s offense, which means his role might be limited.
Adding Moore to the fold would suggest that one of the Niners’ injuries is more serious than expected. It’s easy to speculate that it’s Jennings, who we haven’t seen in August. Cowing has suffered two hamstring injuries this month, so we can’t rule him out.
This move is safe, and also suggests Shanahan will lean into more 12 and 13 personnel. That means Luke Farrell and Kyle Juszczyk could see more time than expected. Or, if Isaac Guerendo stays healthy, the Niners could rely on multiple backs in the passing game. Shanahan has always tailored his offense to its personnel. Injuries or not, 2025 will be no different.
