It’s been four days since the untimely passing of San Francisco 49ers legend Aldon Smith, and tributes continue to pour in from around the football world.
Taking to social media with a touching video soundtracked to Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again,” former teammate Patrick Willis said goodbye to his friend in a post that rapidly resonated with football fans around the world.
“Aldon, you are free now. That’s all any of us really want at the end of the day – to be free to be. Selfishly, we all wish you were still here with us, fighting the good fight of faith. I’ll tell you this – there was nothing like watching you get those sacks and then break out that dance, with that big, infectious smile radiating across the entire sideline, the crowd, and the whole squad. Man, what a sight. You brought an energy that couldn’t be contained and a joy that people were naturally drawn to,” Willis wrote.
“But as Scripture reminds us, there is a time for everything under heaven. God has called you home. Now you are truly free – to be all that you were created to be. Go get that sack record in infinity, brother. Keep shining that light and bringing that same energy wherever you are. I’ll see you in a little while. Always love.”
A Hall of Famer who played all eight of his NFL seasons with the 49ers, Willis was teammates with Smith from 2011-14, where he served as a mentor to the supremely talented pass rusher. While it’s been over a decade since they shared a football field, it’s clear that connection never went away.
