The Commanders hired Brian Schneider as their assistant special teams coordinator

The San Francisco 49ers elected not to retain Brian Schneider after serving as the special teams coordinator for three seasons. The 49ers finished 15th in Schneider’s first year in special teams DVOA. They fell to 25th in schedule-adjusted efficiency in Year 2 and plummeted to 31st this past season.

CBS Sports’s Jonathan Jones reported that Schneider has a new job. He’ll join Adam Peters in Washington and serve as the Commanders’ assistant special teams coordinator. Schneider worked with Dan Quinn during their days in Seattle. Schneider was the Seahawks special teams coordinator from 2010-2020, so there’s plenty of familiarity there.

Schneider’s replacement, Brant Boyer, also has extensive experience in the NFL on the special teams side of the ball. The 49ers are hoping his knowledge from the past decade-plus will help their special teams units return to the mean. The defense figures to do so, while the offense will rely on red zone regression. If the special teams units regress to average, the Niners are in a good spot moving forward.
