On Saturday, the 49ers made several procedural moves. The team also cut defensive tackle Evan Anderson, although a replacement has been lined up in short order.
Kevin Givens is back with San Francisco, per a team announcement. The veteran has made 79 combined regular and postseason appearances, all of them as a member of the 49ers. As a familiar face to the team, Givens will attempt to carve out a depth spot during training camp.
During the 2022 season, Givens handled a career-high 44% snap share and made 11 starts. Otherwise, the former undrafted free agent has been a rotational presence during his tenure in the NFL. Givens made double-digit appearances each season from 2020-23, but he has totaled just eight games played across the past two years.
San Francisco swung a trade for Osa Odighizuwa this spring, acquiring a boost in terms of interior pass rush by doing so. The team also has 2025 second-rounder Alfred Collins in the fold, although he is currently on the active/PUP list while recovering from shoulder surgery. Fourth-round rookie Gracen Halton is in line to handle a rotational role in 2026, and the 49ers’ D-tackle depth chart also features C.J. West (selected in the fourth round of last year’s draft) and James Johnson Jr. (signed as a UDFA this spring).
Givens has played on a series of one-year deals dating back to 2022. His contracts for 2023 and ’24 were worth $2MM, while the 29-year-old collected $2.05MM last year. Each of his deals for that stretch were guaranteed in full, although it would be safe to assume today’s contract will be worth slightly less and likely not include as much of a financial commitment in terms of up-front pay. The 49ers entered today with roughly $71.5MM in cap space, so bringing back Givens will not impact any other roster moves being planned.
