The San Francisco 49ers have already moved on from the Brandon Aiyuk saga in spirit, but they still haven’t actually moved on from their former star wide receiver. Even though it’s become clear that Aiyuk’s days in the Bay Area are finished, where his next stop will be is still up in the air.
On Saturday, Aiyuk turned heads when he posted an Instagram story wearing a Washington Commanders hat. The Commanders have been the most popular rumored landing spot for Aiyuk, so it was a notable step in the saga.
On Sunday morning, Aiyuk got fans’ attention once again. He posted a video on Instagram rambling to his haters and warning not to “run from the belt” among other things.
The former Arizona State star did not play at all in 2025 while recovering from a serious knee injury that included a torn ACL and other ligament damage. Part of what makes him such a risk for any team to trade for is the recovery from such a brutal injury and the fact that nobody has seen him on the field in a long time. Aiyuk was also cited for speeding, driving more than 100 miles per hour, during his absence.
The Commanders still feel like the likely landing spot for Aiyuk for a few reasons. First and most obviously, Washington is in desperate need of more wide receivers around Terry McLaurin. That position has become a weakness in the nation’s capital, and Aiyuk would be an immediate improvement if he is healthy.
Secondly, Aiyuk played with star Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels at Arizona State in college, so the two are good friends and have already shown that they have good chemistry together on the field together.
It remains to be seen whether the two sides can come to a trade agreement, or if there is another team willing to throw in a late-round pick to acquire Aiyuk. if not, the Commanders may just wait it out until the wide receiver is released before bringing him in.
