3 Takeaways From New York Giants’ 34-24 Loss to 49ers
Sportsnaut Sportsnaut

It was another disastrous Sunday that New York Giants fans have been far too accustomed to, as they saw their team get thoroughly dominated by the San Francisco 49ers 34-24.

The final score made it seem like the game was closer than it was as Jaxson Dart threw a 24-yard touchdown to Gunner Olszewski with 1:21 remaining in the game. Both teams came into this contest dealing with several key injuries, but only the 49ers were able to function like an NFL franchise.

The loss drops New York to 2-7 and will all but guarantee their third consecutive double-digit loss season, and questions will linger around the franchise on whether or not changes will be made before the end of the year.

Another Embarrassing Defensive Performance

Defensive coordinator Shane Bowen came into this game on the hot seat after his unit gave up 71 points over the last five quarters. He’ll be under fire even more now after the performance by his defense on Sunday.

They allowed San Francisco to rush for 159 yards on 39 carries with two touchdowns. The main culprit was Christian McCaffrey, who ran for 106 yards on 28 carries with a score, and had five receptions for 67 yards and another score.

Not only could Big Blue not stop the run, but they also could not stop the pass as Mac Jones completed all 14 of his passes in the first half for 143 yards with two touchdowns. He finished the game, completing 19 out of 24 passes for 235 yards. Although the secondary was without three of its starters, Paulson Adebo, Cor’Dale Flott, and Jevon Holland, that’s no excuse to allow a team to go up and down the field with ease all afternoon.

Malik Nabers and Cam Skattebo are Sorely Missed

Jaxson Dart is gritty and is playing better than anyone expected, but the offense is void of playmakers without Malik Nabers and Came Skattebo, and the rookie quarterback can only do so much.

Playing their first game without Skattebo, Dart was the team’s leading rusher, gaining 56 yards on eight rushes with a touchdown. The running back tandem of Tyrone Tracy Jr and Devin Singletary carried the ball 13 times for 61 yards.

The passing game didn’t pose a threat to the 49ers, as there isn’t a wideout who can consistently win on the outside without Nabers, who was lost for the season in Week 4 with a torn ACL. For the third time in the last four games, Dart threw fewer than 200 yards as he finished the afternoon completing 24 out of 33 passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns.

Despite the lack of firepower at the receiver position, New York is expected to be sellers, not buyers, at the trade deadline.

Giants Playing for Pride At This Point

Any slim chance the Giants had of making a playoff push or avoiding having another double-digit losing season died with this loss. Now the only thing left to...
