The heat is officially on for Tennessee Titans head coach Brian Callahan. The Titans fell to 0-3 on Sunday after losing in embarrassing fashion to the Indianapolis Colts. The defeat featured another bungled in-game clock management situation where Coach Callahan looked unprepared and indecisive.
Titans CEO Burke Nihill was booed during Mike Keith’s halftime Ring of Honor ceremony. Owner Amy Adams Strunk was in the tunnel as boos rained down on Callahan at halftime. Callahan is now 3-17 in 20 overall games, and his 15% win percentage is the lowest in NFL history (20 game sample size).
The Titans have preached patience and continuity, but Callahan is nearing the point of no return. Adams Strunk, Mike Borgonzi, and Chad Brinker must be considering a potential change. If so, we’ve identified three potential options to be named interim.
Defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson is one of the logical options. Wilson has never been a head coach before, but his infectious personality and energy has leadership qualities. Admittedly, the defense is struggling mightily, but that appears to be more of a talent issue than preparation issue.
The best-performing unit on the Titans is undoubtedly the special teams group. Coordinator John “Bones” Fassel has done an outstanding job. Fassel was named as the Rams’ interim coach in 2016, going 0-3 to conclude the campaign. He’s an experienced candidate who would be capable. The caveat is, could the Titans name him interim, and still retain him in 2026 as the special teams coordinator? For what it’s worth, he stayed on with the Rams as the coordinator after being passed over for the full-time job for Sean McVay.
Callahan hired Mike McCoy as a senior offensive assistant earlier this offseason. They previously coached together in Denver. McCoy was the Chargers’ head coach for four seasons and has been an offensive coordinator and play-caller in several prior stops.
