Atlanta Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts recently secured a three-year, $54 million extension, which puts him amongst the highest-paid tight ends in the NFL. Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the contract also includes $36 million in fully guaranteed money. While Pitts received a huge contract for his play on the field, Booger McFarland believes that there’s more that Pitts can prove.
“I don’t love it because I don’t think the player has lived up to what we thought he was gonna be.”

While McFarland believes Kyle Pitts deserved a new contract from the Falcons, he isn’t fully convinced the extension was the right move.
“I like the deal. I don’t love it. I like it because I think he’s earned the right, from a standpoint, to get a new contract. Let’s not forget this contract pays you for what you’re going to do, not what you’ve already done. I don’t love it because I don’t think the player lived up to what we thought he was going to be.”
McFarland pointed to the expectations Pitts carried into the NFL, arguing that the former first-round pick has yet to become the matchup nightmare many envisioned.
“We thought he was going to be this match-up nightmare that was going to revolutionize the league: a tight end at 6-4, 6-5, 250 that could run 4.4. He was just going to be a match-up nightmare, and he just hasn’t been that just yet. Yeah, he had his career year last year, which, how many times have we seen a guy have a career year in a contract year? Why can’t you do that? You couldn’t do that the previous three years when the contract year wasn’t there.”
While congratulating Pitts on securing a new deal, McFarland wondered why the tight end didn’t produce at the same level earlier in his career.
“Again, I’m happy for Kyle Pitts. He got his money. He’s earned his money. I don’t love it because I don’t think the player has lived up to what we thought he was going to be or what we thought he was going to be coming out of the University of Florida.”
