Steelers Now
Going into the 2026 season, the Pittsburgh Steelers brought back Aaron Rodgers as their starting quarterback. But with Rodgers most likely playing in his last year before hanging up his cleats, the long term solution for the team at quarterback is unknown, even with young quarterbacks Will Howard and Drew Allar on the roster, who were taken in the past two drafts. Both quarterbacks have the potential to become the team’s successor to the Steelers’ last franchise quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, who officially retired in 2022 after playing for the Steelers for 18 years.
However, with Rodgers as the starter, Howard and Allar might not get the opportunity to show that they are capable of filling that role, which suggests that it is a real possibility that the Steelers select another quarterback in the 2027 NFL Draft to compete with Howard and Allar.
The 2027 NFL Draft class is projected to have a deep quarterback class with many big named prospects expected to come off the draft board early in the process.
One prospect who has seemingly gone under the radar in the national media so far is Senior quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners John Mateer. In a recent interview at the SEC Media Days that was posted on The OU Insider YouTube channel, Mateer was asked about his preparation during this offseason, and what aspects of his game that he was focusing on improving. He also talked about studying legendary quarterbacks on film, including the Steelers four time Super Bowl winning quarterback Terry Bradshaw.
Mateer mentioned how along with working on his footwork, he was asked what else he had been working on. Mateer went on to say, “Yeah I think watching a lot of film.” He continues, “And you know you learn that the mental side of the game is so important. I’ve actually been watching some Terry Bradshaw film. Y’all wouldn’t believe it. I met up with him a couple days ago, and watching his film, he’s great. So being like him, he’s won four Super Bowls, so c’mon, winning games, Terry Bradshaw. Not everyone knows about Terry Bradshaw.”
Mateer was then asked about how he came to learn about Bradshaw. He says, “I watch a lot of quarterbacks, Brady, Rodgers, you just go watch. You know I love watching good football, you know, and I was looking back, and you know because I didn’t know a lot, you know because he’s before my time, maybe a little bit” Mateer said smiling, and went on to say, “But you look and he’s four for four in Super Bowls, was the first overall pick, you go play, find someone to play old-school football, that’s who I picked.”
He was then asked how he ended up meeting up with Bradshaw. Mateer says, “The Dallas Car Show, he was there, yeah”.
