Steelers Now
The Pittsburgh Steelers had a scout in the building last week when 2026 NFL Draft quarterback prospect John Mateer helped lead his Oklahoma Sooners to a win over the Michigan Wolverines in Week 2.
This week, they’re going to back to see Mateer again, sending a scout to Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia to see the Sooners face the Temple Owls. The homestanding Owls don’t have a lot of NFL talent — there are no Temple players currently in the 908-player NFL Mock Draft Database consensus big board.
So it’s pretty clear the Steelers are circling back to see Mateer, along with tackle Derek Simmons, edge rusher Mason Thomas, wide receiver Deion Burks, defensive tackle Gracen Halton and the rest of the Oklahoma prospects.
The Steelers are clearly in the market for a quarterback in the 2026 NFL Draft, and Mateer is a player that is currently projected to be a second-round pick that has a real chance to play his way into first-round territory.
The Steelers also took at a couple of other quarterbacks that are currently outside the top 100 in Week 3: Pitt’s Eli Holstein (264), Kansas State’s Avery Johnson (247) and Arizona’s Noah Fifita (522).
