Sam Leavitt, one of the top quarterback prospects available to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2026 NFL Draft, will miss the rest of the 2025 season due to injury, Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham announced on Friday.

Leavitt has been dealing with a lingering injury that caused him to miss his team’s game against Utah on Oct. 11, but played in each of the last two games, despite showing obvious signs of physical discomfort.

A dual-threat quarterback, Leavitt averaged 56.2 yards per game on the ground before the Utah game, but rushed for just 25 yards over the last two games.

Dillingham said that Leavitt will undergo surgery, ending his 2025 season.

A 6-foot-2, 210-pound Portland, Oregon native, Leavitt first attended Michigan State, where he redshirted in 2023. He transferred ahead of the 2024 season and started for the Sun Devils, throwing for 2,885 yards, 25 touchdowns and six interceptions.

It was anticipated that Leavitt would come out for the NFL Draft with another strong season, but now that he’ll miss the rest of the season, it seems much more likely that he’ll return to ASU for his redshirt junior season in 2026 — taking away one of the players that could have fallen down the board toward the Steelers.

As of Friday, Leavitt was No. 144 on the NFL Mock Draft Database consensus big board, down from a peak of No. 28 earlier this season.

The Steelers are expected to seek a quarterback in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, including potentially using some of their 12 projected selections to trade up for one.

The 2026 NFL Draft will be held in Pittsburgh next April.
