2026 NFL draft: Big potential Browns QB target returning to school

Cleveland Browns fans just want their answer at quarterback. In many ways, it doesn’t matter what their name is, what school they went to, what football team they rooted for growing up or if they like the City of Cleveland or not. Bring on the 15-year starter that can compete for the Super Bowl year in, year out, and Browns fans will get behind him.

If that franchise QB is Shedeur Sanders, all the better. He’s already on the roster, costs very little, and could be built around easily.

In our latest NFL mock draft, Cleveland added QB LaNorris Sellers with a mid-round selection. Sellers has been a quarterback we’ve discussed as an option for the Browns since the summer. The 6’3”, 245-pound quarterback with good speed and a cannon for an arm has been compared to everyone from Cam Newton to Anthony Richardson, and everyone in between.

In three seasons with the South Carolina Gamecocks, Sellers has thrown for over 5,000 yards on 63% completion with 33 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He’s added 995 yards on the ground with 13 rushing touchdowns as well. A 4-8 season in 2025 led many to believe that Sellers could declare for the 2026 NFL draft, despite lower projections as the season went on, or transfer to another school better suited to develop his skillset.

Instead, multiple reports say that Sellers is returning to South Carolina for his senior season:

For many, the language in that tweet will take a while to get used to. Historically, “finalize a deal” was NFL language.

With Sellers heading back to college, the crop of NFL draft quarterbacks loses an option. Fernando Mendoza is expected to be the first quarterback drafted, with no certainties after that. Arch Manning, Dante Moore, Ty Simpson and Jayden Maiava could all return to college as well. Moore and Manning would push Mendoza for the top quarterback in the 2026 NFL draft if they declare.

For the Browns, the lack of options in the upcoming draft would be less of an issue if Sanders proves himself over the last four games. If he doesn’t, and Manning/Moore remain in college, Cleveland might be stuck grasping at straws in their attempt to finally find their franchise quarterback.
