The Seahawks should have a chance to get off to a winning start at Lumen Field in Week 1 of the 2025 regular season.
We’re one week away from the Seattle Seahawks releasing their 2025 regular season schedule. The NFL has done a superb job of making something as simple as a schedule release seem like a monumental event, which in turn also means a lot of you are boosting Field Gulls readership.
While we don’t claim any insider knowledge on the Seahawks’ schedule, a little bit of process of elimination can give us a strong indicator of Seattle’s Week 1 opponent.
The Seahawks do not play the Philadelphia Eagles this season so we can rule out Seattle as the opening night kickoff opponent—I’m pretty sure the NFL has better options in mind to begin with for the reigning Super Bowl champs.
Week 1 will see the Los Angeles Chargers host the NFL’s second trip to Brazil. It’ll be held on Friday, Sept. 5. Seattle doesn’t face any AFC West opposition so scratch Friday off the list.
The Mariners are away on Sunday, Sept. 7 against the Atlanta Braves but return home for a Monday night game against the St. Louis Cardinals, so we can rule out the Seahawks for Week 1 Monday Night Football. As for the soccer-playing Lumen Field occupants, it’s an idle week for the Sounders and Seattle Reign FC are on the road against the Washington Spirit.
There’s nothing on the Lumen Field calendar for Sept. 7, so it doesn’t take much from there to conclude that the Seahawks’ Week 1 game will be at home for a fourth consecutive year.
Seattle was a dismal 3-6 at home last season, a major reason why the Seahawks missed out on the playoffs. That stat looks worse when you realize the Seahawks started 2-0 at home and then dropped six of their last seven. Their home record has been middling dating as far back as 2019, with their best mark of 7-1 coming in an empty stadium during the 2020 pandemic season.
Remember that it’s an odd-numbered year, so the Seahawks and the rest of the NFC have one fewer home game (8) than they do away.
We’ll find out which team is Seattle’s first victory opponent on Wednesday, May 14.
