A deep defensive tackle class and weak receiver class put the Packers in interesting situations
The offseason is flying by. In a couple of weeks, free agency will be in full force. For now, though, our focus is on the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, a week-long event that will officially kick off on Tuesday.
If you’re a Green Bay Packers fan, here are three things to watch out for.
We’ve only heard from Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst twice since the team cut down its summer roster from 90 players to its initial 53-man roster: at the trade deadline and after the team’s playoff loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. On Tuesday, Gutekunst will speak to the press at 9:00 a.m. CT, with the focus being on the 2025 offseason.
In his end-of-year press conference, Gutekunst stated that the team needed to be “aggressive” this offseason, considering their salary cap situation. After years of back-accounting for past performances, Green Bay is finally in a neutral cap situation for the first time in three seasons. With so many rookie contracts on the team, they’re poised to take a couple of big swings, as quality, not quantity, is the name of the game for the first time in years.
How does the team feel about cornerback Jaire Alexander? Will players like Josh Myers, Eric Wilson and Isaiah McDuffie be back? How close is the team to inking a deal with kicker Brandon McManus, who is expected to be one of the top players at the position this free agency period? Gutekunst will certainly be asked to touch on all of those subjects on Tuesday.
Keep an eye on the defensive tackle class on the first day of on-field testing, which will be on Thursday. This year, over 40 defensive tackles were invited to the scouting combine, nearly double of previous classes. Considering that Kenny Clark disappointed in 2024, Devonte Wyatt has failed to become a full-time starter and T.J. Slaton is set to be a free agent, now would be a perfect time for the Packers to either pivot the direction of their room or hedge their bets.
According to the consensus draft board, there are 13 players graded in the top 100 in this class at the defensive tackle position:
The wide receivers won’t be doing drills until Saturday, which means they’ll be weighing in on Friday. As we’ve mentioned before here at APC, [this...
