2025 NFL Draft: Minnesota Vikings Pre-Draft Roster Reset

2025 NFL Draft: Minnesota Vikings Pre-Draft Roster Reset
Daily Norseman Daily Norseman

What does the roster look like as we prepare for the Draft?

We have finally. . .mercifully. . .made it to the 2025 NFL Draft, ladies and gentlemen! Just hours from now, 32 young men will hear Roger Goodell announce their names to start their National Football League career. One of those young men may wind up with our Minnesota Vikings, if the team doesn’t trade out of tonight’s first round entirely.

Now that we’ve made it to the Draft, let’s do a reset of what the Vikings’ roster currently looks like in the wake of free agency. This might also help us to determine where Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and company might be looking as this weekend rolls on. Also, there are more than 11 “starters” on these depth chart, attempting to account for a few different personnel groups.

Offense (28)

Quarterback (2)

  • Starter: J.J. McCarthy
  • Backup: Brett Rypien

This has been one of the ongoing storylines of the offseason for the Vikings. The team let Sam Darnold walk away to Seattle in free agency and haven’t added anyone to the depth chart thus far. I don’t know if I’d expect them to use a draft pick on a quarterback this weekend, but they’ll almost certainly be addressing the position shortly after the Draft.

Running Back (5)

  • Starter: Aaron Jones
  • Backups: Ty Chandler, C.J. Ham (FB), Jordan Mason, Zavier Scott

Jones had his best season last season with the Vikings, but even though the team brought him back, he won’t be expected to carry the load this season. The Vikings traded for Mason as part of a pick swap with San Francisco, and he’ll provide some power to complement Jones’ skill set. Chandler is looking at a make-or-break season, while Scott has been on the practice squad. The Vikings might address this position late, but I don’t know if it should be a priority.

Wide Receiver (8)

  • Starters: Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, Jalen Nailor
  • Backups: Lucky Jackson, Jeshaun Jones, Tim Jones, Rondale Moore, Thayer Thomas

This could be a sneaky position of need and the Vikings could look here earlier than many people expect. Sure, Jefferson and Addison are as good a pair as there is in the NFL, but after that. . .I don’t know. Nailor had a roller coaster 2024 and he could use some competition at the #3 spot, at the very least. Moore could add some juice but there are questions about whether or not he’ll be fully recovered from the ACL tear that cost him all of last season. Don’t be surprised if the Vikings take a receiver within their first couple of picks this weekend.

Tight End (2)

  • Starters: T.J. Hockenson, Josh Oliver
  • Backups: None

Yeah, the Vikings only have two tight ends on the roster right now, since Johnny Mundt headed to Jacksonville and Nick Muse is celebrating a Super Bowl win in Philadelphia. Obviously, they need to address the position...
