A look at what Green Bay could do going into the draft
The Green Bay Packers have found themselves in an unfamiliar position. Because they’re returning 46 players from their 53-man roster (and injured reserve) already, they must use cap space on outside additions this offseason. That’s a privilege they’ve earned by pushing through two years of their all-in cap strategy post-Aaron Rodgers.
So how should they spend that money? After diving deep into the options available to the Packers over the past couple of weeks, I’m finally ready to nail down what my plan would be to add to Green Bay’s roster going into the draft. So without further ado, here’s what a Packers offseason could look like.
The Packers need a fast receiver to replace Christian Watson’s ability to stretch a defense vertically. Watson, who tore his ACL at the end of the 2024 regular season, is expected to be out until at least Week 12 in 2025.
Here’s the problem: There are not many fast receivers in the upcoming draft with the big bodies that head coach Matt LaFleur demands for his scheme. While the free agent class is pretty strong at the receiver position, most of the top receivers — besides Tee Higgins — are on the wrong side of the aging curve and aren’t serious deep threats.
So how can Green Bay navigate this landscape? Spam the Seattle Seahawks with trade offers for DK Metcalf until they block your number. Then sign former Packer Marquez Valdes-Scantling back as a one-year stop-gap at the position so you can go into the draft without needing to take a deep threat if the board doesn’t fall your way.
Solution: Call about DK Metcalf until you have to sign Marquez Valdes-Scantling and hope for a speedster to drop in the draft
Based on the players who could become available this offseason, I would argue this is maybe the strongest position in the entire league right now. Chase Young and Khalil Mack, who players ranked in the top 15 players at their position over the last two years, are set to be unrestricted free agents. Micah Parsons and Trey Hendrickson are having contract disputes. Myles Garrett wants out of Cleveland. Who knows what’s happening with Maxx Crosby. Bryce Huff, a pass-rush specialist, was inactive for the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl. Bradley Chubb, who is coming off of a 2023 ACL tear and didn’t play for the Miami Dolphins in 2024, could very well become a cap casualty.
With all of these options available for the Packers, they have to come away with at least one of these options.
Solution: Take a big swing on SOMEONE
The top two free agents in the defensive tackle class are going to be Osa Odighizuwa and Milton Williams, who are really only positive contributors as pass-rushers. Signing either of them would only double down on their Devonte Wyatt problem, [a player who is...
