The Buffalo Bills enter the 2026 season with more intrigue than they have faced in years. A coaching change, a revamped roster, and heightened expectations have created an entirely new landscape in Western New York. Sure, Josh Allen, DJ Moore, and a retooled defense will dominate headlines throughout the summer. Of course, championship contenders are rarely built solely around star power. Every deep playoff run requires hidden contributors who emerge from the shadows. For Buffalo, two players stand out as particularly intriguing breakout candidates. Wide receiver Joshua Palmer and offensive lineman Alec Anderson may not generate the same buzz as the team’s marquee additions. Still, both are positioned to play critical roles in determining whether the Bills can remain among the AFC’s elite.
The 2026 offseason marked one of the most transformative periods in recent franchise history. After parting ways with longtime head coach Sean McDermott, the organization elevated offensive coordinator Joe Brady to the top job. That signaled a clear commitment to maximizing the prime years of Josh Allen. General manager Brandon Beane followed that move with an aggressive series of roster upgrades. It was highlighted by a blockbuster trade for wide receiver DJ Moore.
Buffalo also added veteran playmakers such as CJ Gardner-Johnson, Dee Alford, Lloyd Cushenberry, and Austin Corbett. In the draft, Beane traded back before targeting players who fit the team’s transition to a 3-4 defensive structure. The additions of TJ Parker and Davison Igbinosun further reinforced a defense undergoing significant schematic change.

Few players on Buffalo’s roster enter the season with more untapped upside than Joshua Palmer. When the Bills originally brought Palmer to Buffalo, the expectation was that he would become a reliable complement to Allen’s aggressive downfield passing style. Unfortunately, injuries prevented that vision from fully materializing. A lingering ankle issue disrupted much of his first season with the organization.
Now healthy and fully participating in offseason activities, Palmer appears primed for a fresh start. What makes his situation particularly appealing is the dramatic shift in the Bills’ offensive hierarchy. Opposing defenses will devote enormous attention to DJ Moore. He is one of the league’s most dangerous playmakers after the catch. Tight end Dalton Kincaid also commands respect as a versatile weapon. That attention creates opportunities elsewhere.
Palmer has always possessed the route-running ability and body control. He is not be the flashiest receiver on the roster. However, he consistently finds soft spots in coverage and understands how to create separation at critical moments. Those traits fit perfectly within Brady’s offensive philosophy.
The numbers support the possibility of a breakout. With defenses focused elsewhere, Palmer could see some of the most favorable coverage looks of his career. A healthy season combined with increased opportunities could allow him to establish new...
