Two NFC teams have reportedly emerges as front-runners to sign four-time Pro Bowl running back Nick Chubb.
With OTAs underway, the 29-year-old Nick Chubb is one of the top names remaining on the free agent market. A gruesome season-ending knee injury in Week 2 of the 2023 season limited Chubb to eight games in 2024, and he finished with 332 rushing yards and three touchdowns in a limited role.
Speaking on ESPN 850 Cleveland, ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler reported that Chubb is unlikely to return to the Browns in 2025. Fowler mentioned the Washington Commanders and Chicago Bears as possible landing spots for the longtime Browns star.
“I do not expect Chubb back with the Browns, barring some sort of surprise or injury. You know, there’s some teams out there that could be in the market for one…The Commanders or the Bears come to mind…looking for an extra back at some point.”

Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels was actually Washington’s lead rusher last season with 891 yards. Brian Robinson Jr. got the most carries (187), with do-it-all RB Austin Ekeler getting the most receptions out of the backfield.
Chicago’s lead RB of 2024, D’Andre Swift, rushed for 959 yards and recorded a career-high 1,345 yards from scrimmage. They also used a seventh-round pick on Rutgers product Kyle Monangai to provide more depth in the backfield.
Chubb had his best season in 2022, when he rushed for 1,525 yards and 12 touchdowns. In 85 career games, he has 6,843 rushing yards and 51 touchdowns. He helped the Browns end an 18-year playoff drought in 2020 and to their first playoff win since 1994.
Given his age and concerning injury history, Chubb wouldn’t cost much and would surely be keen on accepting a one-year deal in free agency. A player with his experience and career body of work (four 1,000-yard seasons) would make Chubb a worthwhile addition for any team looking to bolster its ground game.
