The two young players are coming into their final year of their rookie contracts.
As the Cleveland Browns prepare for the 2025 season, two young players quietly building momentum before season-ending injuries last year could be ready to make a major impact: edge rusher Alex Wright and wide receiver David Bell. Both 2022 draft picks, Wright (3rd round) and Bell (also 3rd round), are entering a pivotal fourth year. Wright is entering the final year of his rookie deal.
Having been released, Bell is not technically on his rookie deal but will be a free agent after the season.
The numbers from their last several full games played suggest a breakout may be brewing.
Wright was beginning to flash consistently in Jim Schwartz’s aggressive front. Over his last seven full games played, Wright tallied 5 sacks and 4 QB hits, often winning with speed-to-power and showing improved discipline in the run game. His snap count remained modest, but his pass-rush productivity climbed. With Isaiah McGuire in the fold and Wright fully healthy, the opportunity is there for him to seize a role opposite Myles Garrett. If he continues his trajectory, Wright could be the disruptive edge presence the Browns need to complement their All-Pro.
Meanwhile, Bell was quietly becoming a deep threat for the Browns’ rotating quarterbacks late in 2023. In his last full six games, Bell has caught 11 passes on 15 targets for 149 yards and 3 touchdowns, including several chain-moving grabs in contested situations. Known for his route precision and toughness, Bell also showed improved chemistry when aligned in the slot, particularly against zone coverage. Bell could carve out a larger target share in 2025 if he stays healthy.
Importantly, both players had their seasons cut short by injuries last season that required offseason rehab. Assuming both are cleared for training camp, Wright and Bell return to a Browns team hungry for young contributors. Their advanced stats show more than just flashes—they point to players trending upward in meaningful ways before being sidelined.
If Wright builds on his pass-rush efficiency and Bell continues to find openings downfield at a high rate, the Browns could benefit from two internal breakouts just when they need them most. Don’t be surprised if both take major steps forward this summer if healthy.
