Ricky Pearsall ready to return; more ramp-up for Brock Purdy: 49ers minutia minute (paywall)
“Shanahan said Ricky Pearsall is on track to return to practice Wednesday. Pearsall injured his knee against the Jaguars and to this point hasn’t hit his speed baselines when running on a side field.

“Hopefully the next two days go good, and if they do, then he’ll be back out there,” Shanahan said. “He had a good weekend.”

The 49ers’ defense is already out of gas … and there are 7 weeks to go (paywall)
“The 49ers’ body language conveyed exhaustion.

Eagles-Packers thread: Can Green Bay bounce back after losing to the Panthers?

The Green Bay Packers are coming off an embarrassing loss against the Carolina Panthers. Those same Panthers just lost by ten points to the New Orleans Saints.

On the flip side, the Philadelphia Eagles have won two in a row, scoring 28 and 38 points respectively. Last week, Saquon Barkley came alive and ran all over the New York Giants. Those same Giants just fired their head coach.

These two teams met last season, when the Eagles won 34-29 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Both quarterbacks threw for over 250 yards in a high-flying game. The Eagles won 34-29 in Sao...

49ers injury updates: Ricky Pearsall could return in Week 11

The good news is that the San Francisco 49ers had no new injuries after Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams.

Per the transaction wire, cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. officially had his tryout for the team on Monday. Kyle Shanahan said the team wanted to “see where he’s at” coming off a serious neck injury. We’ll see if anything comes of the signing, especially a week after the secondary struggled. In an attempt to add team speed, Samuel Jr. could get one of the safeties off the field while Upton Stout potentially replaces Ji’Ayir Brown.

Are the 49ers still true contenders after embarrassing loss?

Are the 49ers still true contenders after embarrassing loss?

The San Francisco 49ers had a disappointing 42-26 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, dropping to 6-4 and falling 1.5 games back in the NFC West.

It was an ugly game from the start, as Los Angeles quickly got out to a 21-0 run, doing whatever they wanted offensively and forcing a key Jauan Jennings fumble defensively.

San Francisco’s defense had no answers for the Rams offense all afternoon long, showing the holes that injuries have created up front.

With the loss, there are certainly questions about the 49ers’ ceiling in a competitive NFC with the current state...

Snap Counts & Grades: The 49ers defense can’t slow down red-hot Rams offense

Sunday was a rough day for the San Francisco 49ers’ defense against Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams. Stafford became the first quarterback in NFL history to throw four touchdowns and zero interceptions in three straight games, and the Rams routinely picked on different players from their new 13 personnel wrinkle. The 49ers’ defense did get some stops, but it came with the team down 21-0 in the second quarter. The Rams scored on every possession in the second half, except the final drive, which was running the clock out in the fourth quarter.

The Mac Jones to George Kittle connection was perfect against the Rams

The San Francisco 49ers put their undefeated NFC West record on the line against a surging Los Angeles Rams team in hopes of a repeat of the Week 5 result.

But after allowing a Rams touchdown on each of the first three drives, San Francisco found themselves in a 21-0 hole that proved to be too deep to dig out of. Despite working their way back into the game, getting the score to a one-possession game twice, the Rams powered through the 49ers’ comeback attempts en route to a 42-26 victory.

There wasn’t much positive from the defense, so like...

The good, the bad, and the ugly from the 49ers Week 10 loss against the Rams

The good, the bad, and the ugly from the 49ers Week 10 loss against the Rams

Have a fun, entertaining game where you win, and follow that up with a loss. That’s been the cycle for the San Francisco 49ers since late September. A myriad of injuries on both sides of the ball have led to Kyle Shanahan and Robert Saleh being over-reliant on players who have no business playing meaningful snaps against a playoff team like the Los Angeles Rams.

The least surprising outcome was the 49ers allowing 42 points in Week 10. The offense scoring 26 points will become the norm, but early mistakes put them behind the 8-ball, and that cushion took the...

49ers’ offense receives reminder of lack of room for error in Week 10 loss

In the wake of a defeat in which the Los Angeles Rams did basically whatever they wanted when they had the ball, the search for reasons to be cheerful for the 49ers might seem as futile as San Francisco’s comeback efforts ultimately proved to be.

But the cause for optimism as the 49ers, now 6-4, aim to ensure what has largely been an impressive season amid a plethora of injuries results in a playoff berth, was easy to see.

Everyone inside and outside of the 49er organization knows this is a football team that will need to be led by...

NFC West standings: 49ers sit firmer in third place with Rams, Seahawks winning

Yeah, this is not going to be a good Monday. The San Francisco 49ers suffered their first NFC West divisional loss on Sunday to the Los Angeles Rams. The Rams are good, and the 49ers—specifically their defense—are snakebit with injuries. The loss puts the Rams into a tie with the Seahawks. The two will play in Week 11 in an important game that could have dire consequences.

As for the 49ers? There are some overreactions on the team, but the key takeaway is that they are injured, especially on defense. That means the offense has to go lights out, and...

After sobering loss to Rams, 49ers seek reset as Brock Purdy nears return (paywall)
“This week’s opponent, the Cardinals, who lost 44-22 to Seattle, are a much softer re-entry place for Purdy than the Rams defense would have been. The same goes for the grass in Arizona, as opposed to the turf the last two weeks in Houston and New Jersey.

And there hasn’t been any rush since Jones has been so cool in the pocket and with teammates and playing so well. If Purdy’s backup was Brandon Allen, like it was a year ago, the $265 million man would...

The San Francisco 49ers had an ugly 42-26 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in a game that they trailed by at least two scores for over 40 minutes.

With the loss, the 49ers took a big step back in the loaded NFC West, falling to 6-4, while the Rams and the Seattle Seahawks improved to 7-2 on Sunday with wins.

Rams do whatever they want in blowout win over the 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers did not get off to the start that they wanted. The Los Angeles Rams did what most teams do on their opening drive, taking ten plays to score a touchdown, with little resistance.

In what needed to be a game of keep away, the 49ers offense went three-and-out on its first possession. Kyle Shanahan was able to put makeup on a pig for nearly three months, but at some point, reality was going to hit.

On the ensuing Rams’ drive, they only needed seven plays to march 86 yards. Just over three minutes later, the Rams...
